History
1998: Cirque Du Soleil
Stephanie started Juxtaposition Winterguard for a group of high school kids who did not want to march under their high school instructor anymore. They asked if she would start a program where could just have fun doing colorguard
1999: X-Files
Carla becomes a part of the program as an instructor
2000: Sunshine
Juxta performs with a cast of 6 members, the smallest number of members that Juxta has ever had. One of these spots was the “revolving door” spot. By the end of the year the member in that spot was a boyfriend of another member and was only there so that they had enough members to compete.
2001: Wild Party
The guard is relocated to Westerville, Ohio, which would become its permanent home while still moving through the high schools in the city. Stephanie and Carla decided to work together and became Co-directors of the colorguard. A large group of almost all new members came in from local schools that were already taught by Stephanie and Carla. Juxta won its first MEPA Championship!
2002: Swing
After the “round system” in Independent A class kept the guard from moving on to finals the previous year, Juxta re-classed into Independent Open for this season, where the top 15 guards make finals no matter what round you were in. This is also the first year where Juxta spun Sabre.
2003: Juxtaposed
Due to the growing popularity of the colorguard in the local circuit, the 2003 season brought a large group of members to Juxta (24, 3 Men and 21 Women). They brought in Heather Ratliff, a Detroit Pistons Dancer, to choreograph movement. After almost missing finals at the Indianapolis Regional big changes were in order. With the addition of Sal Salas, new floor and prop colors, new flags, new uniforms, and a lot of changes to the show, Juxta turned their season around and missed being in IO finals by 0.3 to Interplay from Grand Rapids Michigan. In this season Juxta also files (along with Westerville Winterguard) as a 501 c3 Non-Profit Corporation, Juxtaposition Incorporated, and established a board of directors.
2004: Dance With Me
In light of being so close in 2003, Juxta set out to be in WGI finals in San Diego. Along with Sal, Carla and Steph, Byron Valentine, Jim Buckley and Pat Altman helped push the guard right to where they wanted to be. They win their 4th straight MEPA Championship and headed to California for a small vacation before the hard work began. After a few hard days of practice Juxtaposition performed for the first time on Saturday afternoon in WGI Independent Open Class Finals! In the same year Westerville won the silver medal in IA and was promoted to IO for the following season.
2005: American Pie
With Westerville being promoted to Open class, the decision was made to make the move to the World Class. This year brought even more new faces to the guard. New staff members John Leonard, Jonathan Colvin and Jeff Namian as well as the Return of Heather Ratliff gave the guard a different look than ever before. Unfortunately, with the tough competition in IW Juxta missed being in finals and took the silver medal at the MEPA Championships. This was also Carla’s last year as a director of the colorguard.
2006: Karma
2006 brought a lot of new and talented members to Juxta. The decision was made to return to the Open class so that the guard would have its best chance competitively. They continued with their entertainment style and really started capturing people’s hearts! “Red” and John return on staff and stay!
2007: A Fresh Start
After the audition process there was a great group of members with very high hopes for the season. Trying to take the guard somewhere new, Tracy Wooten was brought in to design the show. After a long season of struggles and the members and staff hating the show, a decision was made after MEPA Championships to scrap the whole thing. In a 17 hour practice, Stephanie and Rory Duffey re-wrote the entire show so that members could have a chance to perform something they at least enjoyed. Being ranked well out of finals basically meant they had nothing to lose. Saving what work they could, Juxta showed up to WGI with an entire new show. New flags, new floor, new work and even new music! The word got out and everyone seemed to know what Juxta was up to. The show was finished on the morning of WGI prelims and in a very emotional performance they performed “A Fresh Start” to a packed house of fans and fellow performers who had heard what was up and came out to support them! At the end of the night they were in 16th place, one spot out of finals, by 0.2 points. NO REGRETS!
2008: Kinetic Energy
The season picked up right where the last one left off. Design team Stephanie Furniss, Rory Duffey, Jon Colvin, John Leonard and Tricia Gooley Designed “Kinetic Energy”. The return of Carla and addition of Jude Boughton, both on a part time basis, helped to put the guard closer to its goal! After the guard falters at the Pittsburgh Regional they turn things around to make a big impact in the IO class at their other 2 regionals! Unfortunately at the Mid-Atlantic Power Regional the guard lost a member to a broken foot! Juxta placed 9th in semi-finals, earning a spot in finals, where they also placed 9th. One member even suffered a broken foot in semi-finals and performed on it in finals. Juxta had the longest open class show in 2008 at six minutes and twenty-one seconds.
2009: Between The Lines
With the Success of the colorguard in 2008, there was a very high return for the 2009 season. That, combined with the addition of a few great new members, Juxta was set up for what was sure to be an incredible season. The design team was headed by Stephanie Furniss and Sal Salas and included Jonathan Colvin, John Leonard, Ashley Studer, Tricia Gooley-Rarick, Jude Boughton, and Joe Heinniger, all who had a hand in designing “Between the Lines”. After a rough start to the regional season, the colorguard pulled it together by the time they walked into the Mid-Atlantic Power Regional on the last weekend on regional competition. By the time they walked out of that regional Juxta had not only won the regional but was the top ranked IO guard in the country and was the only guard in the class to have broken the score of 90.0. Heading into Dayton, Juxta was the Frontrunner for the Gold medal! After a rough prelims run Juxta was only 0.2 out of first place and had won the Movement caption and one of the Effect Captions overall. The guard showed up to play on Saturday and by the time it was all over Juxta was the 2009 WGI Independent Open Class Bronze Medalist and was automatically promoted to the Independent World Class for the 2010 Season. 2009 showed the highest number of age outs that the guard had ever had (6), but now all are eligible to return to the guard!
2010: YOU
2010 marked the start of something new for Juxtaposition. With the return of quite a few members plus five members who had already aged out of the colorguard, Juxta was ready to go. After auditions Juxta had its highest number of members ever (26, 7 Men and 19 Women) and showed more potential than any Juxta yet. This is also the first time the guard had more people traveling more than an hour to rehearsal than not (17 out of town, 9 in town). The 2010 Staff Includes Stephanie Furniss, Sal Salas, Rick Subel, Jonathan Colvin, John Leonard, Ashley Studer, Charles Williams, Rory Duffy, Carla Burgess-Tomsa and Costume Design by Joe Heinniger. Juxtaposition finished 10th place.
